PEGASUS SEWER AUTHORITY
Conemaugh Township, Cambria County

Johnstown, Pennsylvania

The Pegasus Sewer Authority began out of efforts begun by the Conemaugh Township Supervisors more than three years ago. At that time efforts began to site a new United States Army helicopter base at the Johnstown Cambria County Airport. The facility needed sewage collection facilities and over a three year period, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore chose the route though Conemaugh Township Cambria County.
The project is 100% funded by a connection fee and utility service contract with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The Pegasus Sewer Authority has complete responsibility for property acquisition, construction and operation. The contract is in the amount of $2,567.253.00 and includes 3 miles of line and 3 pump stations.

The sewage collection line varies between ten and twelve inches and is sized to take into account future growth in the system.

The Construction of the main trunk line forto service the airport is only the first phase of the project. Only about 90 residents of the township will be able to tap into the trunk line directly.
The Authority has already applied for a Community Develpment Block Grant through Cambria County to provide laterals in the Cover Hill sectionof the Township.

Engineering work will begin this fall in preparation of submitting a request for funding to Pennvest for sewer lines in the Cover Hill and Bon Air areas to tap into the main system.
The very steep terrain seperating Conemaugh Township from the City of Johnstown has been the major obstacle to construction of this line in the past. An impossible situation existed where not enough people lived in the area to justify the work on the hillside, but without the sewer new homes and businesses could not be built.
